We Reviewed the Best Combo Canister Vacuums in Spring 2025
One Vacuum to Rule Them All?
You know what I get asked whenever I do vacuum reviews? “Can you test a combo canister vacuum so I don’t have to buy twelve different machines to clean my house?” And listen—I get it. Not everyone wants a dedicated vacuum for every surface like they’re building a cleaning museum.
Personally? I like an upright for carpets (because: power), and a little Bissell® Zing for hard floors and dusting… okay, and maybe a cordless stick vacuum for quick hard floor clean-ups, too. I like my vacuums like I like my skincare—specialized and effective. But I also know some of y’all live in apartments, small houses, or just don’t want your cleaning closet to look like a vacuum showroom. You want one machine to do it all.
So I did the legwork (and arm work) to find the best all-in-one combo canister vacuum.
Combo Vacuum Requirements: What It Needs So It Doesn’t End Up in the Garage
1. Suction. If a vacuum doesn’t suck, then it just… sucks. Period. I need a vacuum that will inhale the grit out of your carpet. I tested these machines on both carpet and hard floor with sand, popcorn, dog hair, human hair (don’t ask), cheerios, and kitty litter. If it can handle that mess? It’s a contender.
2. Beater Bar. No beater bar? No bueno. You need those rotating brushes to dig into your carpet and fling that dirt up. I looked for adjustable height (because carpets aren’t one-size-fits-all) and automatic hair detangling, because no one’s got time to sit there with scissors performing surgery on their vacuum roller. For hard floors, you’ll want either a beater bar you can switch off (unless you enjoy flinging dirt around) or a dedicated hard floor attachment.
3. Attachments. I like a vacuum with the basics: crevice tool, stair/upholstery brush, and a dusting brush. Extra credit if the vacuum stores them neatly onboard and doesn’t just expect me to keep track of them like a scavenger hunt.
4. Cord Length. If I can’t reach the far corner of my living room without unplugging and moving to the next outlet, we’ve got a problem. Also, retractable cords? Chef’s kiss. 😘
5. Weight. Upright vacuums need a little junk in the trunk to dig deep into the carpet—but when it comes to canister vacuums, too much bulk is a nightmare. If the canister is built like a beach ball and smacks into every corner like a demolition derby, no thank you. Bonus points if it can perch on stairs without falling.
6. Ease of Use. I don’t want to assemble my vacuum like it’s IKEA furniture. Can I switch from floor mode to wand mode without needing the user manual and a prayer? Does the canister empty without me turning into a dust-covered Disney villain? These things matter.
7. Canister/Bag Situation. The canister should be not so big that it’s a pain, and not so small that I’m emptying it every five minutes. I prefer bagless (just dump and go), but if you’ve got allergies or hate dust, bagged might be your best bet. Look for a fill indicator so you aren’t flying blind when it comes to replacing the bag.
8. Filtration. If your vacuum is puffing out clouds of fine dust behind it like a glitter cannon, what even is the point? Look for HEPA filters or multi-stage filtration systems so you’re not just moving the mess around.
Let’s Watch the Chaos Unfold
And the Winners Are:
It was a tight race between the Miele® and the Kenmore®, but in the end, the Kenmore® snagged the win. Why? Because it performed like a champ and didn’t cost as much as your last electric bill. (Love you, Miele®, but we’re not all made of money.)
As for the Dyson®—sigh. I wanted to love it. I tried to love it. But it scattered popcorn like confetti, the neck got clogged, and it’s built like a boulder. Vacuuming stairs with it? Might as well train for Everest. Not ideal.
Final Verdict: If you’re looking for a one-vacuum wonder that won’t destroy your walls or your will to live, Kenmore® is your best bet. But if you want the premium feel and don’t mind the higher price tag, Miele® still brings the heat.
Now if only one of these things could fold my laundry too…
